My laptop only works with my router when it is within 2 feet of it-how can I get it to work within 10-15 feet?

I have a Dell Latitude D630 and Linksys Wireless-G 2.4GHz 802.11g with SpeedBooster. My laptop works fine with other unsecured connections in my building - is there a way to test the router?
