Are todays youth more self absorbed and narcissistic than in the past?

I am 24, and I find it hard to interact with others in my age range and even in late 20's because many - though not all, seem too self-occupied. If i see an attractive girl and try to get her attention, she seems to get off more about the fact that Im checking her out and what I think of her than potentially getting to know me. For other guys, we rarely go out of the way to compliment each others accomplishments or strengths, instead everyone seems in competition with one another. Anybody else notice this too?
